Just got home from home group. We had a record number of people show up tonight - 16 people! People of different ages and backgrounds but coming together to discover more of who Jesus is and what it means to follow Him.
Our conversations tonight centered around the idea of Unconditional Love. We read about an exercise in the use of metaphors. I know a lot of us were struck by the truth behind the exercise. The exercise was to think of metaphors to describe people. Here are some metaphors that are commonly used:
1. We VALUE people.
2. We have an INTEREST in people.
3. We INVEST in people.
Strangely, all these common metaphors are economic terms. I know I have used these metaphors but have not considered the "economic" implications. Do I geninuely care about people without somehow getting reciprocration of sorts? Can I truly love people unconditionally or do I have a price attached? I know I want to be able to do that and not expect anything in return. Basically to love like Christ loves.
Immediately I thought about this passage of scripture:
1 John 4:17-19
17In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.
18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
19We love because he first loved us.
19We love because he first loved us.

What a perfect example! We can and should love unconditionally because we were shown that unconditional love. I definitely have some practicing to do.
