Today, I was listening to one of my favorite communicators, Erwin McManus, talk about the subject "Adapt." Some of the things he said caused me to reflect in my own personal life and my ministry, and work life. We live in an ever changing world, and now more than ever before we have a need to adapt. I have been told that I am a "black and white" kind of guy; pragmatic if you will. I like to think it is because I see things more definitively - a yes or no works great for me. So, with a personality like that, being able to adapt doesn't come easy.
As I reflected today, I was able to raise my head up and know that I have been able to last this long, through the many phases of my life and adapt to the the changes. The ability to adapt was usually loud and clear today to me because of different things that are happening in my life. I have been in a constant state on limbo with my application for permanent residency here in the States, so trying to figure out how to adapt is quite difficult. As a business manager, I have to look at certain trends and juggle my multiple hats at work to adapt. Then being involved with a church plant that is determined to engage people in discovering Jesus and finding out what it means to follow Him, there are some challenges in adaptation.
The one thing that Erwin said that has stuck with me today is "if you are not willing to change, you cannot bring change." That sucker punched me! I am prone to be resistant to change - I do have a stubborn personality along with being pragmatic. I was challenged today to be willing - not only for my own sake, but more importantly, for the sake of many people I know that don't have a relationship with Jesus. Strange as it sounds, I do try to live by Royal Ranger motto "READY - Ready for anything! Ready to work, play, serve, worship, live and obey God's Word." I think that about sums it up, if I can constantly live that way, I'll be in good shape.
